Our Services

Myofascial Kinesis Structural Integration

Myofascial Kinesis Structural Integration is at the heart of our science-informed functional model. Addresses the body as an interconnected system organized through fascial lines — continuous connective tissue pathways linking muscles from feet to head. Superficial to deep, linear to spiral, we assess how tension distributes across the entire kinetic chain.

Rather than treating isolated pain, we evaluate how force transfers through the system and work to restore balance, glide, and efficient alignment.

This is our most interactive and assessment-driven session. Client participation is often required, including guided movement, positional transitions, and off-table work when indicated.Structural change is achieved through both precise manual therapy and active neuromuscular integration.

Sessions may include:

• Postural and gait analysis

• Fascia restriction release

• Precision neuromuscular therapy

• Alignment refinement

• Guided corrective movement

• Prescribed functional strengthening and mobility work

• Portions may be performed off the table on a bench.

Because portions of this session may involve seated, standing, or movement-based work, supportive athletic attire (such as a sports bra or fitted top) may be recommended. If appropriate, your therapist will advise you in advance.

Fascial alignment is the objective. Efficiency is the outcome.

Sessions may include but are not limited to:

• Postural analysis

• Fascia restriction release

• Neuromuscular precision therapy

• Guided corrective movement

• Alignment refinement

• At home, recommended functional movement, stretches and strengthening

Neuromuscular Therapy

(Delivered Through the Empirical Knead Functional Model™)

Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) at Empirical Knead is not applied as isolated trigger point work. It is delivered within a fascia-informed functional structural framework that evaluates how localized pain relates to global mechanical imbalance.

This precision-based approach addresses:

• Myofascial trigger points

• Muscle Spasticity

• Nerve entrapment patterns

• Referred pain syndromes

• Postural strain

• Overuse injuries

• Enhanced range of motion

• Compensation and recovery following high performance and/or athletic demand

Rather than simply releasing tender points, we assess the mechanical relationships contributing to tissue overload — including cervical-pelvic alignment, fascial line dominance, and load-bearing asymmetry.

Sessions may incorporate:

• Targeted neuromuscular release

• Fascial glide restoration

• Structural repositioning

• Corrective movement reinforcement

• Breath and stabilization sequencing

Many clients experience measurable reduction in pain and improved range of motion within the first session. When symptoms reflect deeper structural compensation, further phased care may be recommended.

Neuromuscular Therapy at Empirical Knead is both precise and strategic — designed to resolve immediate discomfort while supporting long-term mechanical balance.

Functional Bodywork Series

Adaptive Structural Care & High-Level Reassessment

The Functional Bodywork Series is designed for clients requiring ongoing structural evaluation and adaptable care management following resolution of a primary complaint.

Once acute or dominant pain patterns are stabilized, previously overshadowed compensations often become more apparent. This series allows us to address emerging patterns while preserving global alignment and mechanical efficiency.

Rather than passive “maintenance,” this tier supports:

• Continued structural refinement

• Fascial line reassessment

• Neuromuscular recalibration

• Load distribution monitoring

• Adaptive response to lifestyle and athletic demand

For some clients, this series serves as the natural progression following advanced structural integration. For others, it may serve as an introduction to functional structural care without committing to a comprehensive integration arc.

Sessions remain clinically guided and adaptive. Each visit begins with reassessment and progresses only as indicated by structural presentation and tissue response.

Available in 60, 75 and 90 -minute sessions.

Ideal for:

• Clients who have resolved a primary complaint

• Individuals seeking ongoing structural optimization

• Athletic or high-demand lifestyles

• Clients preferring flexible, high-level care without fixed sequencing

Ideal for:

• Chronic or multi-layered pain patterns

• Post-rehabilitation cases

• Advanced structural integration follow-up

• Performance clients

• Long-term structural maintenance

These sessions emphasize refined palpation, fascial mapping, and strategic intervention within the Empirical Knead Functional Model™.

Restorative Functional Massage Therapy

This functional full-body session is informed by clinical research demonstrating the body-wide effects of therapeutic touch. Work follows the natural flow of the fascial lines as they present in the individual, addressing global tension patterns rather than isolated complaints. Techniques may include fascia-focused release, therapeutic Swedish methods, and integrative tissue work to support nervous system balance and overall vitality. Shawney, Alisa, and Tony are available..

More than 13 years of formal research collaboration established the foundation of our model. Today, that foundation is continually refined through ongoing study, clinical observation, and engagement with emerging scientific research in manual therapy and fascia science.

Restorative Functional Massage Therapy creates the internal environment necessary for healing. Subtle can be powerful.

Medical & Clinical Recovery Services

These services are adapted for clients with medically complex needs and are delivered with clinical caution and coordination when appropriate.

This category includes specialized applications such as:

• Prenatal Care, after 1st trimester

• Oncology-informed care (with physician clearance)

• Post-surgical recovery support

• Immune-compromised clients

• Autoimmune-related conditions

• Injury rehabilitation

• Recovery from significant accidents

Pressure, pacing, and technique are carefully adjusted to respect healing timelines and systemic stress load. Safety and integration guide every decision.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapy

The lymphatic system is a vital component of immune function, fluid regulation, and cellular waste removal. Unlike the circulatory system, it does not have a central pump — movement relies on breathing, muscle contraction, and fascial mobility.

Emerging research suggests that fascia plays an important mechanical role in supporting lymphatic flow. Restrictions within the fascial network may contribute to localized congestion or inefficient fluid movement.

Lymphatic Drainage Therapy is a gentle, rhythmic technique designed to encourage the movement of lymph fluid toward appropriate drainage pathways and lymph node basins.

This therapy may assist with:

• Post-surgical swelling

• Fluid retention

• Inflammatory conditions

• Immune system support

• Recovery from injury

• General detoxification support

If swelling is present in one area — such as the ankle — treatment is often most effective when the full drainage pathway is addressed. The lymphatic system functions as an interconnected network; isolated treatment rarely yields optimal results.

Our structured lymphatic protocol is delivered with careful pressure control and clinical awareness of surgical history, tissue integrity, and healing timelines.

Healthy lymphatic flow supports tissue environment, reduces excess fluid burden, and contributes to overall physiological balance.

Youth Structural Development & Alignment (Ages 10–17)

Adolescence is a critical window for structural imprinting. During rapid growth, posture and movement patterns can become reinforced long before pain appears. This session includes postural assessment, fascia-informed neuromuscular therapy, targeted soft-tissue balancing, and corrective movement integration.

We work with youth across the full developmental spectrum — from active, healthy adolescents seeking improved posture and performance to those navigating more complex structural or neurological considerations.

Our clinical background includes experience supporting youth with scoliosis, sports-related overload, post-concussion tension patterns, growth-spurt asymmetries, and chronic compensatory strain. That experience informs our approach even when working with otherwise typically developing teens.

The focus is not diagnosis-based treatment, but guiding structural efficiency, reducing compensatory tension, and supporting long-term resilience during a period of rapid change.

A 4-session Development Series is available at 8% preferred pricing. Available exclusively with the Clinical Director.

Pediatrac Massage(Ages 3-9)

Pediatric Massage at Empirical Knead supports healthy nervous system regulation, coordination, and foundational movement development in children ages 4–9. Sessions are developmentally appropriate, clinically guided, and always parent-informed.

We work with children across the spectrum — from typical developmental growth to more medically involved presentations. Much of our clinical experience includes supporting children with neurological involvement, muscle tone irregularities, post-surgical recovery, sensory processing challenges, and early spinal asymmetries.

Equally, we care for children experiencing growing pains, sports fatigue, anxiety-related tension, or simple postural habits common in today’s device-driven environment.

Our role is not to replace medical care, but to support soft-tissue balance, improve proprioceptive awareness, and help the developing body organize more efficiently within its current capacity.

Medically Complex Pediatric Support Available

Parent participation and communication are integral to care planning.

We work alongside medical providers in cases involving:

• Neurological conditions

• Developmental delay

• Post-surgical recovery

• Muscle tone irregularities

• Sensory processing challenges

• Mild spinal asymmetries

• Chronic muscular guarding

While we do not replace medical care, our role is to support soft-tissue balance, improve proprioceptive input, reduce compensatory tension patterns, and help optimize comfort and functional movement within the child’s current capacity.

Parents remain involved in care planning, and education is provided for simple home support strategies when appropriate.

Functional Cupping

Functional Cupping works through decompression rather than compression.

Most manual therapy applies pressure from the outside in. Cupping reverses that force, using controlled negative pressure to gently lift tissue and create space within the fascial and muscular layers.

This decompressive effect may:

• Improve fascial glide

• Reduce local congestion

• Support tissue hydration

• Decrease protective muscle guarding

• Improve mobility

By encouraging movement of interstitial fluid and hyaluronic acid — a key molecule involved in connective tissue hydration — cupping can help restore smoother movement between tissue layers.

Many clients notice immediate reduction in tension or discomfort.

At Empirical Knead, cupping is typically applied dynamically, gliding along fascial lines or combined with gentle movement to support functional integration. Static cupping may also be used when localized decompression is appropriate.

Functional Cupping is not about leaving marks. Although some evidence of the cupping may be evident.

It is about restoring mobility and reducing restriction — always delivered within the Empirical Knead Functional Model™.

8. Inflammation-Related Fatigue(Cancer, Autoimmune & Chronic Systemic Fatigue).

Research demonstrates that manual therapy—when applied with rhythmic, full-body sequencing—can reduce markers of systemic inflammation and regulate the autonomic nervous system. These physiological effects help explain why clients with multiple, seemingly unrelated symptoms often experience improvement across the board after a single structured session. At Empirical Knead, this research informs our protocols and supports our dual focus on structural alignment and the systemic environment that influences pain, energy, and recovery.

The Empirical Knead Difference: Structure & Systemic Inflammation

Most manual therapists focus only on muscles or isolated areas of pain. At Empirical Knead, we take a dual approach that addresses both structural imbalance and systemic inflammatory load  — the two primary forces shaping how the body functions, recovers, and experiences pain.

Our work is informed by more than a decade of clinical research and therapist education conducted at Emory University (Our work is informed by more than a decade of clinical research and therapist education conducted at Emory University, including co-authored peer-reviewed research demonstrating that structured manual therapy significantly reduces cancer-related fatigue and improves quality of life in survivors. Read one study here: Massage Therapy Decreases Cancer-Related Fatigue (Cancer, 2018)

We evaluate your body through two essential lenses:

1. Structural Alignment

How posture, fascia, joints, and movement patterns organize or compensate. Imbalance anywhere affects everywhere. Oftentimes the symptom has a source elsewhere in the body.

2. Systemic Inflammatory Load

How immune response, stress physiology, circulation, and metabolic factors influence pain, fatigue, and resilience.

Research shows that rhythmic, structured manual therapy can reduce markers of systemic inflammation, improve circulation, and support autonomic nervous system regulation. These physiological changes help explain why clients with multiple seemingly unrelated symptoms often experience improvement across the board.

At Empirical Knead, we don’t just treat symptoms —

we restore the structure and the system behind them.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions
    What is Neuromuscular Therapy?

Neuromuscular therapy is a form of specialized massage therapy and bodywork that focuses on relieving pain, reduces muscle spasms,  improves muscle tone, improving mobility and performance by targeting muscles and connected tissue in specific ways to reeducate and re-posture the musculoskeletal alignment. At time, involving client Interaction to facilitate some of these neuromuscular techniques. See the research in our Blog

    What is Structural Alignment?

        Involves

         • Continual Assessment: Evaluating posture, gait, and movement patterns to identify structural imbalances or compensatory patterns.

         • Myofascial Techniques: Hands-on manipulation of fascia to release adhesions, improve mobility, and restore elasticity.

         • Neuromuscular Re-education: Using guided exercises or movement cues to retrain muscles and correct movement dysfunctions.

         • Structural Integration: Addressing the body’s alignment over time, often using a systematic approach inspired by modalities like Rolfing or Anatomy Trains.

         • Kinesiology-Informed Approaches: Incorporating movement analysis and corrective exercises to reinforce manual therapy results.

        Related Modalities:

         • Rolfing Structural Integration: A method that realigns the body by focusing on fascial layers and posture.

         • Anatomy Trains: A system that examines myofascial “meridians” or lines throughout the body, linking distant areas of tension and imbalance.

What should I expect during a body treatment session?

The structural integration work sometimes includes working on the bench or on the floor, where the client may be requested to wear a sports bra as work is done on a bench in an interactive, dynamic fashion. Integrating other techniques that may be required to meet the client where they are on that particular day - sometimes you just need to chill and relax and on those days we help you chill and relax.

Table Thai please wear comfortable loose fitting clothing as you will be assisted in many different stretch positions and is the most dynamic session that we offer.

All other sessions, come prepared for a massage. If we need to prompt you otherwise, we will.

How to make the most of your bodywork session.

First and foremost, make sure to drink plenty of water. Consume more than you normally would post sessions. Be kind to yourself with food, hydration, and in thought.

The foundation of our approach is to provide quality of life and enhance your experience in everything that you do from reaching for the seatbelt to benching an extra 25 pounds this week. Our bodywork sessions often accompany some functional exercise prompts, tailored functional strengthening, or simply how to move within your body within your daily life.
